SPD Mountain shoes with SPD road pedal?

Will an spd compatible mountain biking shoe work with spd road pedals? This is the setup I am thinking of using for my commuter bike.

I tried with my shoes and it didn´t work so it may vary , ask the shop to try for you , if they won´t then find a better shop to frequent .

I bought mountaik bike type shimano shoes, for a spinning class a few months back.
When I bought my bike and got spd pedals for them, I let them see what kind of shoes/kleets I had and they got me the ride pedals to use on my road bike.

so that might help, show them your shoes/kleets and they can go from there
