The higher end pedals Shimano SPD are a little easier to engage/release and
also weigh a little less. If you're happy with your current Shimano pedals,
you probably won't notice much difference with more expensive ones.

As you go up the "spud" foodchain the pedals get better/lighter materials, bearings and finish. The basic spd mechanism is the same.

Shimano has different mechanisms and cleat types on it's R- and SL- pedals.

I just bought a pair of cheap M525s on sale from Nashbar and am very favorably
impressed.

I have another bike that will need pedals. Is there a reason other than
advertised weight and materials to go up-market for the pricier models or just
stick with the cheaper ones?

Is it just a case of "this years model" or do the pricier ones get better
bearings, designs, construction, what?

i have 4 different types of spd's, including yours, and have tried
friends bikes with yet others of various vintages. imo, the current
series, m-520, m-540 & m-959 are much improved on their predecessors,
and they weren't bad either.

if you do serious mileage, go higher end - bearings last a little
longer. for value/function, go low.

I have 3 pairs of SPD's. One pair is a 525, the other is (I think) an 858?
The only thing I'd do different on my mountain bike is go with Time pedals.
They really shed mud better. But, then you need more shoes! Will the
vicious cycle ever stop?!?!?

I'd also buy nothing but Look's for my road bike. I have SPD-R's and they
squeak and creak like crazy, unless I spray them with something.
