No way. Twisting is the problem. That is how you release your foot. It can't go in in the release position. Align your foot properly and push straigt down, Twist to release. Loosen the tension as others have suggested to a minimum while you get use to them. No hot spots, that's an urban/bycle myth. The hard sole distributes the load and SPD are fine on road bikes.
 
Sounds like the spring tension in the pedal in question is set too high, if you look on the back side of the assembly you'll see an Allen screw, that's your spring tension adjustment. Turn the screw counterclockwise to lower the tension.
