Speedmachine recumbent for sale

Recently a chap accosted me as I parked the Streetmachine at Tescos and
asked if I knew anyone in the market for a Speedmachine: changes of
circumstances (job folding plus moppet arrival) meant his had to go :-(

He's sent me the details to post on, given below. There were a couple
of pics as well which I've not posted here (obviously) but which would
be available if you email him and show the bike appears to be in very
good order. I've added a couple of comments.

"The machine I have is a HP Velotechnik speed machine

<ftp://ftp.hpvelotechnik.com/prospekte/smgt_prospekt_gb.pdf>
<http://www.hpvelotechnik.com/produkte/spm/index_e.html>

Accessories I got with it included the speedbag [PC: looks like the
"race shape" one, which gives better streamlining and is lighter but
only 20l luggage, you may wish to confirm with seller], the hub dynamo
lighting, disc brakes and I think an airflow seat [PC: looks like the
Airflow to me]. All in all I spent 2350 gbp on it. [PC: has the tiller
steering rather than the aero bars and is silver. The rear light looks
like it's gaffer-taped to the speedbag behind the rider's head
presumably for better visibility, but a neater job should be possible
and this isn't going to be an irreversible hack on the seller's part.
2001 spec the discs probably Mag Julies but should be hydraulic in some
shape or form, again you may wish to check with seller]

I bought it all new around May 2001 as I was working in Dundee and
lodging near Errol with my parents and could commute along the Tay along
the low road which comes through Invergowrie. An extraordinarily nice
commute.. Within a couple of months the job collapsed and I've ridden
the bike maybe 2-3 times since when the weather was good.
I supposed the bike has done less than 500 miles.
Price - Having spent good money on the bike and given its condition I'm
obviously keen to get a fair price for it. It's in excellent order -
having been stored inside the house.
However it's not new so I'd be happy with a decent offer.
Let me know if you're interested - it's still with my parents near Errol
[PC: between Perth and Dundee, within easy striking distance of either],
or if you know of someone else who might be."

Chap's name is John Drummond and his email is [email protected]

I would be interested if my bank balance had another 0 on the end. But
it doesn't :-(

Upon the miasma of midnight, a darkling spirit identified as Peter

[ Speedmachine for sale ]

Have you suggested eBay to him? Huge audience, probably the best way to
gauge the likely price, and he can always set a reserve below which he's
not interested in selling.

You really should spamtrap before posting other people's addresses to
Usenet...

Peter, one of those URLs is a Streetmachine, the other a Speedmachine.
This is definitely a Speedmachine, yes?

Ah, should've checked his URLs! Yes, it's a Speedmachine, very definitely.

I'm scarily tempted, even being a long way from Dundee and never having tried
a remotely comparable machine. Just out of curiosity, and nothing to do with
my approaching birthday at all, roughly how much do you think a fair price for
a second hand Speedmachine like this would be?

I was trying to come up with a sensible number myself, but I'm very bad=20
at valuing things like this. A data point would be a vanilla new one=20
(no lights, no tailbag, no rack, mechanical discs) would set you back=20
=A31775. That would be slightly lighter in the frame department as HPVel=
=20
have changed the rear triangle from CroMo to aluminium (the rest of the=20
frame on all SpMs is aluminium), but aside from that around the same.

A figure I plucked out of the air was ~ =A31,600. Dave L. probably has a=
=20
better idea of what would be fair.

Plan B it is then. (I have a MIG welder and an angle grinder and some
cheap old bike frames. But no spare time to introduce them to each other,
nor a clear idea of what I want. Yet.)

(I was pleasantly surprised when I mentioned having seen a recumbent on
ebay for £800 (Challenge Mistral mentioned on urc earlier) to my wife
and she said "how much do you spend on petrol at the moment?" not "you can't
possibly spend that much on a bike".)

Mmmmm. MIG welder! If only I had access to such technology. Version 2 of=20
the frame is a toss-up between a) Buy MIG welder and learn how to use=20
it. b) Cut and mitre tubes and hand to engineering firm to get them=20
welded.

Buy the welder. It might cost more up front, but just think of the sense of
achievement. I take it you checked out that mitring program I mentioned?
I've not got any bikes to make, but I tested it out on a few kitchen roll
tubes and it works pretty well :)

Yup. I remembered seeing it before but not using it as I was working
with square tube!

WRT welding. Telford college is running an evening course on MIG welding
(And another on TIG which'd be fun, but less useful) starting in
September which I'm hoping to attend.

But having spent a day on a Mistral, I wouldn't give you =A3500 for a=20
brand new one to be honest. I'd replace the Streetmachine ASAP at full=20
price (=A31425 + a big chunk on extras) if it was eaten by voracious jedi=
=20
pixies, though. Mileage varies, of course (some people seem to like=20
them), but the only thing the Mistral did for me that was positive was=20
convince me that Magura rim brakes were miles better than Vs and cantis, =

and I subsequently upgraded the brakes on the Streetmachine to HS-33s.

Seat didn't suit me, finish could've been better, suspension was nowhere =

near as good as HPVels, Optimas or Nazcas I've ridden and the standard=20
rack was completely hopeless for panniers. Which reinforces my usual=20
point on 'bents that buying them unseen (and, more to the point,=20
un/sat/) is IMHO a rather silly gamble with a potentially large amount=20
of money.

That's easily fixable, although you might be a little cramped on my
Ross. Errr, just remind me of your phone number & I'll call next time
I head your way (probably Sunday pm, after the GP).
