I have a friend who is going to give me a pair of speedplay pedals...but he has no idea which ones they are (x1, x2, or x3). Is there anyway to tell just from looking at them??

Three different materials:x1 - Titanium - natural finish
x2 - Stainless steel - natural finish
x3 - Chromoly - black finishThe spindles are different colors as indicated. You should be able to tell just from that. Hopefully I don't have the numbers in reverse order (I don't think so). Regardless, all it would take is a quick visit to www.speedplay.com
Unless of course they're zeros, then the actual pedal is of a slightly different design. Again, a quick visit to the website will show you the visual differences.

Thanks for the reply mansmind,
I actually looked at the spindles, but i've seen x2s and x3s with the same spindle...so that kind of threw me off. Also, some that look like they have the same finish, but are completely different.
