Agree the cleat screws shouldn't be overtightened, but never heard any clicking from the cleat screws on the Carnac and Shimano shoes I use. Have to wonder what was making the clicking sounds you heard;

Sorry I wasn't clear. It isn't an audible click. It's a hesitation, or ratcheting feeling when tightening the cleat screw. Maybe it's just the locktite.
