On a ride last fall in the Missouri Ozarks with my buddy Joe, a squirrel
chose me to be the instrument of his death. I saw him coming from a leaf
filled ditch on the right side of the road. Usually, I would be grabbing for
the brakes and hunkering down for the possible collision.
In this instance , he came over too fast and I made the instantaneous
decision to just keep going. Well, he came through my front wheel spokes and
then was thrust between the front fork and finally hit my chainwheel. I
never flinched (well maybe a little) and he didn't impede my progress at
all.
I looked back and Mr. Squirrel was dead as a doornail on the side of the
road. I went back to check him out and he didnt have any blood spilled at
all. Apparently, he snapped his little neck and was killed instantly.
Moral of the story...don't brake, dont panic and just keep moving forward.
You can look back and you can go back. Speed cures all ills.
