Does this combo work or do I need a special link (or should I just use
replacement pins)? My goal is to be able to remove the chain for cleaning.
Thanks for reading!

It works. I've used the SRAM link on Campagnolo 9 speed chains for a
few years. And I've used them on Shimano 9 speed chains for other
people's bikes for a few years. And I know people who use the SRAM
link on very high mileage tandems with Shimano 9 speed chains for a few
years. I do put on a new link when I replace the chain. Don't know if
I need to or not but I do.

Yes, you use the gold type. Not recommended by Shimano or SRAM, but
they have pins and chains to sell you ;-)
