  1. Staying in St Briavels for a week soon and we are looking to do some walking
in the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean. A group of six first timers in the
area so any suggested from walks of between 5 to 9 miles from those who know
the area would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,

A splendid choice. My favorites in the immediate area are:

    1) The Wye Valley Way between Chepstow and Tintern - choose a day with
good visibility since the views over the Wye from the viewpoint (Eagle's
Nest?) near the top of 365 Steps (car park ST527972) is wonderful. Since
the Wye Valley Way and Offa's Dyke Path run parallel in the area any
number of circular walks are possible, although it is possible to walk
from St Briavels to the main road to catch a bus to Chepstow and walk
    back.
2)The Gloucestershire Way north of Chepstow, a rather lovely rural amble
with views over the Severn. Nothing larger than a hamlet on the way, not
even a main road to cross. Again get to Chepstow and walk back.
3)Forest of Dean. Any of the old railway cycle tracks make a good start.
Also the section of the Gloucestershire Way from Nailbridge out of the
Forest of Dean to May Hill is a favourite of mine. You can wander at will
in the forest, there are paths everywhere, but beware that behind the
veneer of deciduous trees that line the roads and main paths there are
    some less pleasant conifer plantations.

Also in my rambles I've also noticed Ramblers Association "St Briavels
Spur Trail" waymarks without working out what it is. Oh and there is a
leaflet describing walks in St Briavels parish available (see
    http://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/index.cfm?Articleid=1197 )

All the long-distance walks are well waymarked and are marked on the OS
Explorer map. So you are spoilt for choice.

Are you staying in a rather nice norman castle?

Thanks Martin for your favourites in the area, your first one that includes
a visit to the Eagle's Nest viewpoint rang a bell with me and I dug a sheet
out with the walk on it. Thanks for the other suggestions too I will be
    looking at them also.

We are staying in a cottage about half a mile out side of St Briavels and
not in the castle, but I'm not complaining I might have been in my tent!

Not seen it documented anywhere, but a walk I've done a number of
times is from the George in St Briavels to the Lion in Trellech and
back again. Not quite as easy as it looks, because you have to drop
right down to the valley floor and then regain all the altitude on the
other side. Then, after a few pints and lunch, you have to do it all
over again in reverse. A couple of hours in each direction, if you
don't get lost. e me if you want more details.
