Statin Haters Alert

Lipitor stops progression of plaque buildup. Don't let this newsgroup
scare you from taking statins. "Patients taking Pfizer Inc's
cholesterol-lowering medicine Lipitor (atorvastatin calcium)
experienced a significant reduction in the progression of
atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, compared to patients
who received Pravachol (pravastatin), according to new data presented
today at the annual meeting of the American Heart Association."

I don't see how I could take 80mgs of Lipitor daily. I tried taking
20mg Lipitor a few years ago and experienced severe leg cramps, so I
went back to Pravachol. Guess I'm stuck.

You're right though - more fodder for the statin wars.

How do statins compare to Aspirin? Both statins and Aspirin are anti
imflamatories. Aspirin probably does not reduce Cholesterol but cholesterol
has not been shown to "Cause" atherosclerosis. Half of people with CAD have
average or below average cholesterol.

Same here!! High dose Lipitor was a disaster for me. I felt like i was
beat with a club. No way i'd come near that again.

Getting serious when they start buying research to show they are
better then their competition. So much for good research.

I agree that statins should be considered in an overall treatment against
atherosclerosis

....A significant reduction of the carotid intima media thickness (IMT) was

This is a great question, so I did some www.pubmed.gov searching and came
up with an interesting study.

Aspirin has been shown to 'attenuate' or increase the rate of carotid
intima media thickness (CIMT) regression in type 2 diabetics. As to how it
does this, and if this mechanism is similar to the statin, I don't know.

http://tinyurl.com/uq7c

Antiplatelet drugs attenuate progression of carotid intima-media thickness
in subjects with type 2 diabetes.

Thanks for spurring this thread!

They just spent a lot of money to show Lipitor was better than a
competing statin. You are going to ruin their whole plan by bringing
up another alternative that is dirt cheap compared to their competing
statin. Remember it is their market share that is most important. Get
the patients money.

Anyone have the full text and know which statins were used in the study?

"Bristol-Myers is sponsoring its own clinical trial comparing 40
milligrams of Pravachol with 80 milligrams of Lipitor in an attempt to
prove that standard amounts of LDL reduction could be sufficient to
prevent major heart problems. "

$tatin$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$4

www.pfizer.com???????????

Hardly an unbiased place to do your shopping Brad. Do you buy hardware
for your business the same way? Log onto Dell and take their word for
what their goods do and don't do?

Of course Lipitor will ream out your arteries Brad. It'll ream out
your brains too.

Care to, dare to, contact www.pfizer.com and the American Heart
Association (who are up to their clogged little arteries in funding
from Pfizer) for declared interests?

The good doctors have sold their names and the Heart Association has
sold its dignity and credibility down the river.

This is a pimped study Brad.
