There really is not much different with the actual set-up of your push-push indexed shifter and the current push-pull indexed shifters. The only real difference is you are pushing with your thumb to control the upshifts on the rear and downshifts on the front, rather then pulling with your index finger.

The rules for setting the high-low top out screws on your derailleurs are the same. The rules for setting the b-screw on the rear is the same. As are the rules for front derailleur alignment. Shift into the highest gear on the back (smallest cog) and lowest gear on the front (smallest chainring) and with finger tension, take out the slack of the inner cable. Then use your barrel adjusters to fine-tune as you shift through the gears.

You mentioned that you changed the wires (inner cables). Did you pre-stretch your inner cables? To do this, put your inner cables in, then pull on an exposed inner cable with some force. I take the rubber-coated handle of a tool (like a hammer) to help me stretch a cable without chewing my skin to hell. Even after you pre-stretch a new inner cable will stretch a bit after riding, so you might need a few periodic adjustments for the first few rides.

Did you also change the cable housing? If you did change the housing did you maybe use brake cable housing by mistake instead of gear cable housing? Brake cable housing has an inner layer of metal that is kind of spiral wound along the length of the housing. Gear specific cable housing uses strands of wire that run parallel with the housing.

This is kind of hard to explain, but the net result is if you used brake housing for your gears, the housing is compressing too much to give clean shifting. That is, when you hit the shift leaver, some of that force is being used to compress the housing instead of being used to move the derailleur.

Hi,

I have a Kashmir Carrera Mountain Bike fitted with Shimano 200GS brakes and gears.

The bike changes gears for the front ok, but at the back, it only changed up and is now stuck in 5th. I took the bike to a local bike shop who t0old me that the internal part of the gear change unit on the handle bars had broken inside and therefore I needed a new unit. He said that as these were a very old make, the only option would be to saw off the old unit and then mount an independant replacement.

I did not really want to start sawing off bits, so I would appreciate it if anyone knows where I can buy this uni from.

Try Ebay, or buy new with a comparable modern shifter/brake for the same number of gears (I believe your bike has 7 rear gears, but you should verify). Be sure to consider whether you have older cantilever brakes or newer v-brakes.
