These four don't have suspension and are thus worth the effort. Avoid
all the others like the plague.

I haven't looked through this list in detail but you know the answer
yourself. If they were any good at all they would not sell at auction
for £50. And seeing some of these are Apollos - Halfords own brand -
they are presumably bikes which Halfords found they just could not
shift at any price.

They probably aren't even worth melting down for scrap.

Funny you should say that because i have seen wheels and tyres sell
for 20-30 a pair on ebay. You could also sell the seats , pedals etc.
They may be worth more as spares than intact.

Nothing, as long as it is designed with proper damping and machined to
very fine tolerances. Such constraints make it cost at least £400 for
the frame.

On cheap bikes, it still costs a fair bit of extra money, so the rest
of the bike's worse, but it bounces up and down when you ride it, and
then after it's worn a bit after about 200 miles use, it also sways
from side to side. This makes the bike hard to control. It also adds
lots of weight which makes the bike less responsive to ride
(particularly with the lack of control) and more work. If you buy one
of the rigid bikes, replacing the tyres is all you need to do to make
an acceptable bike for getting about on the road. Once you put
mudguards and a rack and lights on, then you've got something that's
useful for travelling most of the year. Total cost of upgrades, say
£60 if you're fortunate.

However, at this price, the brakes will be hard to adjust, and the
gears will stop shifting easily fairly quickly, also being hard to
adjust, too. Maintenance will easily cost £20 to sort them out, but
replacement bits can be bought £10 or £20 at a time and will improve
performance dramatically.

thanks for that. I may just buy on of those four and make the
adjustments you recommend. Let you know how it goes.

I would make a guess that this one is older than the others, but assuming
it is in good nick would be one I'd be interested in. Puegeot have made
some nice MTBs. The've made some **** ones too. Without looking at it,
it's very hard to give advice.

A quick look at ebay shows:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=3696734847&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT

Nice looking but simple Ridgeback.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=72571&item=3697085980&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

Carrera with ali frame. Possibly a bit lighter, but personally I would
want the Ridgeback.

BTW I have nothing to do with these people and can't vouch for the
relative conditions of the bikes.

Hope this helps.

You certainly have. Not those wheels and tyres, however.

If it's any good it's very expensive; if it's cheap it's heavy; and even
if it is good it isn't normally useful on smooth surfaces - good
suspension units have switches to lock them rigid for use on the road.
Good suspension is only better than no suspension on really rough
surfaces; bad suspension is never better than no suspension, and it's
heavier and there are more things to go wrong or break.

There aren't any full suspension bikes worth buying under £1,000. A good
pair of suspension forks will set you back about £300, a good rear
suspension unit about the same.

The items that get supplied in the £50 range tend to be engineered for
show-room 'gee-whiz', rather than engineered to be capable of doing
the job.

They'll basically make pedalling the bike harder, without giving you
the advantages decent suspension will provide.

Yes, but all wheels are not created equal, same with tyres. If you put
cheap remoulds on a sports car do you think it would still corner as
well? Now apply the same to bikes...

By what criteria are you judging "excellent"? I don't know, I haven't
seen them, but I'm not sure you can be quite so sure, or you wouldn't be
asking us if this stuff was any good...
