Just found the book with the bikini clad girls encounter. It's in "Walking the Tops" by Rex Bellamy
printed in 1984. I thought it was older than that and looking at the photos it does look very dated
now with the author and his mates wearing parkas and natural fibres (good god - how did they cope
back then, or even survive 😉.
Anyway, the encounter was near Canisp/Suilven. I quote;
"Four slowly moving figures on the way up gradually became identifiable as two couples...The two
ladies wore the hill-walker's conventional boots and socks but nothing else except bikinis. No doubt
they had something more substantial in the rucksacks. As it was, their imaginative application of
the 'mix and match' system was perfectly adapted to the terrain and the heat. Irrelevant though it
may be, they were easy on the eye because they had the kind of figures that justify exposure. More
to the point, they looked comfortable and cool as anyone could reasonably hope to be on such a
sweltering day. A lot of nonsense is talked and written about the wrappings appropriat to hill-
walking. Beware the temptation of fancy clothing at fancy prices."
It's a great read and I can recommend it highly.
There's been some great responses to this thread. Anymore descriptions of people wearing (or not
wearing much) unusual garb are much appreciated, or if you've had a go at stripping on the hills, be
bold and tell us all. We won't spread it!
