Stuart O'Grady update - some TdF spoilers

It's a little hard to track down on the web ATM, but in a very bad day
for the Aussies, McEwen missed the cut (he's been off ever since stage
1), Mick Rogers crashed and is out (no specific details yet) but the
worst affected is O'Grady, according to the Team CSC website :

Stuart O'Grady in Bad Shape

[15.07 20:30] This year's winner of Paris-Roubaix, Australian Stuart
O'Grady crashed and had to abandon Tour de France during Sunday's
mountain stage. O'Grady was in bad shape and was taken straight to
hospital for observation after the crash.

O'Grady was working his way through the peloton with bottles for his
teammates during the final descent, when the crash happened.

The Australian rider landed on his right side and punctured one lung,
broke his collarbone, shoulder blade, five ribs as well as some bones
in his spine. It is important to point out though that it is not the
spine itself, which is broken.


A speedy recovery, Stu. The only Australian left is Cadel Evans, who's
currently 6th and looking reasonably strong although has thus far only
ridden defensively.

Mea Culpa - Simon Gerrans is still going, and Mick Rogers dislocated
his shoulder.

I hope they gave him a bit of treatment in addition to his
"observation"!

I was p'eed too, to see Mick hit the deck! Mick had nowwhere to go, DÁrroya appeared hung on the guardfence and launched into space, looked like Mick clipped his bike and clobbered the road hard or the fence, he was sitting on his butt by the time the camera caught up... then it was a bloody great effort to catch the leaders again and try the ascent before it got too much....(Johann Brunyeel did the same thing at the same bend they said)

Simon Gerrans rode a super race, he was working hard the Moreau group, riding tempo and running back for water and was there till the last climb and he helped launch Moreau to the finish (ahead of Evans & co). Simon coming in 13 mins behind Rasmussen was bloody great...maybe he might get a chance to have a go at a stage but I am sure he is vital to Moreau and will be the super domestique for him , (like Klöden is for Vino...).

McEwen missed the cut too, so he gets to play with his kids for a week or two in the summer sun and not suffer on the climbs... could be worse

Well I hope Stuey comes through this on top. It's been super year for him and he deserves a break not this.

It was said that Rogers crashed during a breaking manouver and he said it
was just cycling. There was a large skid on the road and his back tyre was
off. Arroya's bike went straight into the fence behind Rogers.

It looks like Rogers just came round the corner too fast, locked up his
brakes and slid into the barrier hard. Arrayo behind him had no where to
go, rode into the barrier and went head first over it, and was very lucky
to escape unhurt.

Exactly. PPL keep saying Arrayo crashed first but its fairly
impossible to crash behind someone before they crash.

It didn't help that Phil Ligget kept saying it too.

Sadly there is no footage of the crash.

Phil seemed to lose the plot last night. Kept mixing up Vino and
Valverde, got the distance remaining completely wrong a few times, and a
few other things that just had me scratching my head. Maybe with so many
groups moving about he was struggling to keep up with what was going on.

waited for Vino's group and then attacked and caught Moreau again...

But when you are sleep deprived it all seems to make perfect sense.
Maybe the brain automatically adjusts for 'Liggetisms' as noone here seems
to have been fooled by him.

At about the time they began the climb just after Rogers crashed then, re-caught the lead group. Rogers was shown with a grimmace on his face.

Phil then started talking about 'Vino'

(I thought that Phil was just talking about Vino even though the camera was on Rogers - no problem)

Then Phil stated that Vino was from the ACT... ??????

Who ever the young guy is, he lost the plot from almost the beginning.

We are still chuckling over miles being "old currency".

It wasn't only the riders who were overheated one day as they both
drooled on screaming about tactics you apply on flat road when it was
obvious that most riders were struggling up the climbs and would be
happy to just get their ass to the end in one piece within the time limit.

Alot of what Phil goes on about is nonsense and he seems to be getting
slower at picking up what is going on, but it is TV and you need continous
coverage to hold the interest of people with remotes (cycling tragics will
watch no matter what). Phil is there to add colour, which is why there is a
websites that collects Ligettisms.

I have trouble typing more than two paragraphs without making a mistake,
Phil has to talk continuously for four hours. Cut him some slack.

before the prologue Stuey purchased and handed out black wrist bands for all of the CSC TDeF team . The bands arn't about a charity or cause other than a reminder to each team member when the going gets tough
