stuck cassette lockring

I generally put the lockring tool on the hub, install the quick release (not snug) and then clamp
the lockring tool in a vise. Then apply the chainwhip, sliding a pipe or frame bender over it for
leverage if necessary. You may not actually lack leverage if you were already able to break the
whip. I would put it back together and try again.

Dear Lou,

I've had fair luck with clamping the lockring tool into a huge vise, laying a 3-stud chain tool over
it (not a chain whip), dropping the cassette and wheel down over it, and heaving on the chain tool.

A glance at nashbar's catalogue tells me that my 3-stud chain tool is officially known as pedro's
cog wrench. One side fits my 11-tooth cog and the other handles 12-tooth cogs. A chain whip can grip
more teeth on a bigger cog, but I find them more awkward to use than this rather solid tool, just as
I prefer to have the cassette-spline-tool handled by the vise instead of my supposedly free hand.

If more destructive methods are needed, you may have to introduce the reluctant lockring to the
irresistible charms of a Dremel tool's cutting wheel, but that's fairly risky.

Let's hope that someone else offers more sensible advice.
