Does anyone have any experience with the Schwalbe steel studded tires for snow and ice? I would like to continue commuting to work until the snow gets deep...

Not the Schwalbe, but I've tried a Nokian and a noname studded tyre for commuting and they've both worked fine. Beware that the studs only help on hard-packed snow or ice, on soft snow/slush they'll behave just like an ordinary knobbly tyre.

Which Nokians did you try? Thanks.
It was Nokian Hakkapeliitta W106, 26x1.9'', or maybe an earlier equivalent. Stud count matches anyhow. It did allright for commuting, but for uneven ground/aggressive cornering more studs would have been welcome. They were a bit tricky in the way they offered decent traction on the flat and straight and then quickly lost performance when things got a little rough.
