What am I missing here? I've wondered for some time about the need for
sun protective clothing. I've never gotten sunburn through bicycling
or any other type clothing. If I don't use a heavy-duty sunscreen (30
SPF or more) on exposed skin, I become a lobster. What is the need for
sun protective clothing? Only albinos are lighter skinned than me. If
I don't need sun protective clothing, who does?

I have to concur. I don't get it. _Clothing_ is sun-protecting. I
have a similar pallor, always burn if I run around in the sun either
without clothing (but, then, that would be the least of my problems....)
or without sunscreen on exposed skin. I know several dermatologists on
a first-name basis.

I have never had any hint of a burn on parts of my body that were under
clothing. That is sort of what a farmer's tan is about.

I think this is just another case of fear driving people to buy things
that do nothing but drain their wallets.

I agree too, though I did burn through a cheap/thin jersey once, while
doing all-day rides at 6000+ feet altitude (more UV up there).
Burn-through clothing is clearly the exception, however.

I've never been burned through a solid color jersey or shirt, but I have
been burned through thinner white t-shirts.

But in general these people pushing sun protective clothing are just
catering to the nannyism that's run rampant in the USA because of our
sensationalist and alarmist press.

People are always looking for an angle to sell us something, but skin
cancer is no fun either.

"People are always looking for an angle to sell us something, but
skin

there's a youth problem hear?

in florida, skin cancers from getting outside 365 and/or fishing do
occur in older people, like me, whose skin no longer produces the
whormones and then oils (cebum) giving ZITS pustular infections filled
with dead tissue excreted by bacteria, some deadly, who who who are
eating your body.
large doses of ultraviolet when young reduce the skin's effectiveness
for protecting itself later on like now for me where if I do not use
spf 40+ on neck and outstrecthed bar arms then the skin develops brown
spots, if I use 40+ then i don't have brown spots.
same goes for the legs. hot wind burns shin skin. covering shin skin
with spf 40+ protects not only from the wind burn but the hail of dog/
bird/human excrement found 1' up off the pavement.
nothing like young flesh.
welp, time ta ride dude!

Being a prime candidate for skin cancer myself, it really pisses me off
to see this snake-oil stuff. These people are preying on our collective
fears, trying to sell us something we just do not need.
