Dear All,
I have failed to identify this mech, Suntour XE Compe front derailleur, on
the companys website. Can any one help?
Thanks,
Neil

Never heard of it. It probably has 20 tooth capacity. Offer it up to a
chainring to check the curve of the cage and get some idea of the
maximum chainring size.

How do I check that it is compatible with the chain and the 8 speed
freewheel.

Try it and see? In the unlikely event that it's a new model for 9/10
speed chains you can probably add a spacer to the back of the cage, or
bend it a bit.

XE Compe doesn't ring any bells with me, either. However, there was an
*XC* Compe, which had a 24T capacity. It was late 80s / early 90s, from
memory.

In any case, the "X" bit would tend to indicate that it's an ATB mech,
so I'd agree that it's likely to handle at least a 20T jump, and
probably more.

There are 9 google hits for "Suntour XE". Three of them are you asking
in this newsgroup, the others do not refer to front derailleurs, but
other components. This I would take to be a clue that XE is not the
correct name for your derailleur.

Is it any one of these here?

The text on this page, though not a specification, may give some clues
to Suntour derailleur compatibility.

I have to apologies for the type, it is XC Comp. The brief instruction
manual includes a variety of serial numbers such as FD-XP00-gxh none of
which can be found on the current suntour website.

If it is not on the current website, which goes back to 2004, then this is
most likely a 7/8 speed derailleur- would I be right?

The XC Comp had a capacity of 24 teeth and tended to be used with
22/32/42 compact drive (microdrive in Suntour parlance) chainsets. This
should be fine with many 7 and 8 speed systems, might be made to work
with others. Its going to depend on the chain you use more than the
number of sprockets. Suntour isn't really the same company as it was in
1992, and the web is a tad different too, so your chances of finding
more technical documentation than you already have in a PDF are slim.

You'd be better of asking if anyone here has had problems doing whatever
it is that you want to do with it.

The front ring is 48/38/28 - will this be a problem?

The earlier models of the XC groupset came in two versions, standard
with a 26/36/46 chainset and microdrive with 20/32/42. The front mech
seems to have been the same for both, and if it copes with 46T it
shouldn't have a problem with 48T. Later models were only available in
microdrive, so they might have changed the cage to suit. The only way
to really tell is to try it and see.

It wasn't -the arm touched the frame in lowest gear - it was meant for a
mountain bike frame - mines was a racing one.
