I know I should ride the bike before buying 1, that is part of the problem. I essentially have a Surly Pacer frame, which is the right size (my friend bought it to replace his frame, but later realized he couldn't because it doesn't have the right drop-outs). Anyway, I am wondering if anyone knows anything about Surly, and this frame. I know it is heavy and the fork is heavy, but how does it ride, is it good quality, I just want to get some info. Thanks,

Surly bikes have what I would consider a cult following, especially with single speed and fixed-gear riders. From what I know about them, they are a kind of consciously low hype, high quality builder of steel bikes. I'd say you have a nice frame, and a good starting point. Building a bike from a frame is a pain, but really fun at the same time. You get to pick every part that goes on it, and that's fun. Getting everything on and adjusted properly is a pain. Molly TIG welded frames and forks. The dealer will be the biggest help in this type of purchase. See if you can find one who sells lots of steel frames and/or builds them up -
My friend is a manager of a local bike shop. He is helping me build it as well, so I should not have much trouble tuning it. He has already shown me a lot of what I know about working on bikes.

A buddy here has the Surly Long Haul Trucker, built up for a cross-state rails-to-trails ride. The frame looks like fine quality and value for money. The LHT came only in a "slime" green color last year. I like the low cost, low-hype Surly attitude.
