SUS Forks: 'Zocchi vs Fox...

'way back when, I decided to go with Marzocchi forks because I read somewhere
that they were easily overhaulable by the user.

Just bought the 'zocchi seal kit to do my first overhaul: $45.00 for four
seals.

The same thing for a Fox fork is $15.00.

Oops!

Not to mention the instructions' stated need for something called a "seal
press"....

Now that was just wrong......and NO, it wouldn't work.....

and a note, I sent my Bomber to Zocchi and it cost me $86 for rebuild plus I
had scratched the stanchion tube and zocchi put another on at no cost.
Great service.

That's what I'm afraid of doing at the moment - scratching the stanchion tube.

That dust seal doesn't want to come out.

Anybody got a trick for getting it loose? Some kind of oil? Some other tool
besides "a small screwdriver" (WTF is "small"? Screwdrivers *do* have size
numbers.... Geeze...)

The smallest flat head screwdriver you can find and a very steady hand.

I'm figuring 5-7 mm. Wide enough that it doesn't penetrate the rubber (I've
got screwdrivers smaller/sharper than some hypodermic needles...) but narrow
enough that the curve of the stanchion doesn't interfere with full contact.

Sounds like you've done it.

Steady pressure in one spot? Or do you kind of work around the circumference of
the stanchion?

Anything to break the bond between seal, accumulated crud, and stanchion?

Funny, I have a 2001 X-Fly 100 that I've never had to touch.

Same here. The x-fly is on my old loaner bike and I've never done anything to
it. Probably about 7k miles on that one.

The Pro ETA I'm working on, OTOH, has been making squishing noises way above and
beyond it's twin that's on my HT.

I started this and there's no turning back now.... but the more I think about
it, the more I wonder if I'm pissing into the wind.

Zocci's seal set only contains the two dust seals and the two top seals. Seems
to me like their failure would only result in visible seepage - whereas the
squishing I hear is probably something else inside....

Once I get those dust seals and the retaining rings off, maybe I'll be able to
do some more visual inspection of what's inside.

Yes, that's it. This technique helps to remove it more evenly from the
stanchion.

Got a '99 Z2 Light and only had to replace the seals once when I used
lithium grease on them - don't do it, it ruins them

Seem to remember using a correct sized socket, and the kit was only £15

Good low priced seals at Enduro seals. 20 bucks for seals for my Zocchoi

I just installed a set of those in my '99 Z2 Atom Bomb. In the
instructions on the website, they recommend using the Marzocchi Seal
Press or an inverted socket (a rather large one) to press the oil seal
into place and piece of 1-1/4" PVC pipe for the dust seal. I didn't
have any of those on hand but I found an old aluminum tube that was used
for the main rear suspension pivot on my Schwinn Sweet Spot URT bike
that was exactly the right size. Talk about a stroke of luck. I sold
the bike years ago (with a new pivot) but kept that damned aluminum tube
because it looked like it might be just the right size for something
someday.
