I am wondering how easy it is to swap an 8 speed shimano cassette for a 9 speed shimano cassette.

Any special tools required - or better to get the LBS to do it?

It's pretty easy; you just need a chain-whip, a Shimano compatible lockring tool.....oh, a big spanner, and some BRUTE STRENGTH :)

That's how the hacks bugger stuff. Either know what you are doing or get a torque wrench too.
