I'm restoring a nice old mountain bike. I'd like to change the 7-speed
cassette to an 8-speed (found nice 8-speed shifters at a bike swap).
Question is... can I just swap cassettes or do I have hub issues? All
advice is appreciated.

Some hubs yes, some hubs no. What is it?

to eyeball the hub. -

to eyeball the hub.You can eyeball the hub without removing the cassette. I'm guessing
it's a Shimano of some sort and by its age probably a Uniglide
freehub. See Sheldon Brown's cassette web page for compatibility
