Switching from a triple to a double - Front brifter issue?

I recently purchased a lightly used cross bike with a 105 group, and a
Truvativ triple crankset.
I'd like to switch to a double, compact. I see that the 105 left
brifter is listed at double/triple compatible - but I don't really
undertsand how this is so.
Do I need to make some mechanical change to the shifter? Or do I just
set the limit screws on the front mech so that I only use part of the
cable travel available on the brifter? Or is there some other
recomended method?
Also, is a new front mech called for?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Limit screws should do the trick- that's what I did. Depending on the
top ring size of the compact ring you may need a Deore or similar FD. I
found a 50T top ring would work OK with the 105 derailleur but to get a
46T working reliably I had to use a Deore bottom pull- which
fortunately was very cheap.

It is not possible to make a triple shifter or derailer that won't also
work on a double, since 2 is a subset of 3.

No..

Right, set the limit screws in the usual manner, there's no special
magic required.

I'm with you on the paranoia. It is never that easy. Unless, sometimes, just to
mess you up, it is just that easy.
