Tandem Exchange Rate

I have located an ex demo Dawes Discovery Twin which I will be buying
as soon as the space in the garage is sorted out. I was in two minds
about shelling out the £650 until I converted into GSUs - golf
subscription units.
I don't play golf but a workmate tells me his annual sub is about
£450. So my tandem is only 1.5 GSUs or 18 months golf. And after 18
months I'll still have the bike and he'll have the reminder coming in
for the next years sub.
Bikes are actually cheap and in any case as someone once said on
this group you can never have too many bikes.

Beware - there be dragons!

If you start comparing things to the price of golf, then pretty soon almost
everything starts to seem good value! The main exception in my experience
is sailing...

As a long time ex-smoker I use the cost of a 20-a-day-habit to justify all
my leisure purchases.
When the chancellor whacks a bit more duty of a pack of ciggies it gives me
licence to buy another cycling widget :)

Silly as this sounds some people who comment on the price of bikes and good
cycling kit seem to think spending £1500 a year to knacker your lungs
perfectly acceptable.

That is probably the most ingenious way to justify expenditure ever.

You should encourage him to switch to a more exclusive club. Then you
could justify splashing out even more on bikes.

Standing under a shower ripping up five pound notes :)

But its a valid comparison. Both are, in the words of Mark Twain, a good walk
spoiled.

The stepfather of a schoolfriend of mine raced an offshore powerboat, which is
much the same but with 50 pound notes. At least it was at 1970s prices.

Don't forget to factor in the cost of a new set of clubs, bag, trolley, funny
clothes etc each season.

"Dear, I need a new golf trolley, the wheels on the old one have gone
out-of-round while it was in storage for the winter."

Well it convinced me but I wish I knew somebody who was a power boat
racer so I could buy a Cannondale tandem instead of a Dawes.
