The Koehler Method of Dog Training (Howell Books)

or for a short version why it works, Vicki Hearne _Adam's Task_
the essay on Washoe and on ``How To Say Fetch!''

If the latter essays make sense to you, you can use Koehler. If not,
not.

I figure dog training also becomes people training. It's a two-way
street. It's gotta be, in order to be fair. And it's gotta be fair
in order to work. So while you're training your dog, your dog is
also training you. Dogs sure really know how to work symbiosis.
But then, so do people -- at least, people who are fluent in Dog.

Last night my good buddy, Roy, dropped by with his border collie
(Katie.) I usually find border collies hard to deal with because
they're always "on", and too ready to go to work herding stuff,
and nipping at heels, ankles, behind the knee, and loosely-hanging
clothing. But Katie's pretty mellow, and she's learned to no longer
pick up skunks from the back yard, and then bring them in her mouth
into my basement room here. I suppose she'll still snap at passing
bees and get stung on the tongue, though. Dogs have such an amazing
capacity to independently learn without training, and also such
an amazing capacity to humanly screw-up. (So do cats, but they
won't admit it.)

Your Annie is a lovely person. I'd be honoured if you'd give her
a good vibe on my behalf. Make 'er smile and feel good.

cheers,
Tom

Look up the Vicki Hearne book, you'll tune right in.

To ask the dog to obey without a corresponding commitment to the dog
is profoundly corrupt.

Most of training, in fact, is the dog testing the depth of your commitment
in the matter being ``learned.'' The dog knows very well what you want,
but not that you're committed as you're asking him to be.

Most of Koehler is aimed at answering the dog's question.
