Why rag on the guy?

By your rationale, wouldn't anybody wearing a jersey with logo's on it be a "poser"? I mean really, not only have I not actually earned a yellow jersey, I sure am not riding for Phonak or Postal, regardless of color of the jersey. Yet I have Phonak and postal jerseys and many others, and *GASP* some very cool mountain bike jerseys that I ride on the road...OH NO!!! Mountain bike sponsors on a road bike rider <insert random cataclysmic, end of the world events here> .

My Mother-in-law saw me in a yellow jersey, she didn't say, "What a poser, earn the jersey you loser..." What she said was, "My, what a pretty color". "I like this one better than the one that looks like your spine and organs are hanging out". (which I believe is also a MTN. bike jersey.... could be wrong, and don't care if I am)

From a motorists point of view, I can tell you they are NOT thinking, "Hey look, I'm in Arkansas and it's the leader of the tour de France!!!!!". What the motorist is thinking is "THANK GOD, I can actually see the guy on the side of the road".

For the record, that kid at your door on Halloween is NOT spiderman, has no super powers, and cannot sling webs.... although he may be "posing" as spiderman, I suspect that he does not mean any dis-respect to the costume by emulating and suporting his heroes. Although if you feel obligated to point out his "poserisms" <word?> to him and his mom, that's your business (might as well grab his candy bag while you're there). And if you see the Fairy God Mother, grab her sack to, I'm betting that wand is a "FAKE"!!!!!!!! (Walking around with poser, wannabe wand, it's an OUTRAGE!)

Relax... enjoy the sport any way you can and be refreshed in the knowledge that the more people buy jerseys, the more options will be available to all. Bicycle commerce = good for our hobby / sport.

I think I'm gonna wear a Mongoose jersey tomorrow.... <I don't own ANYTHING they make> I found it cheap at a bike shop, it looked cool, I bought it... I wear it.

Guess that makes me a "dork"... who cares?! I'm healthy, I'm happy, I skipped out of work and am NOT cutting the lawn at home while I'm out on a ride. Life is good.

Isn't making fun of a riders jersey color (or size) just a little along the lines of "judging a book by it's cover"?

You and me, buddy. We'll get some other riders together, have a race, all wear yellow and call it the "Sunshine day 400". It's a 400 meter race, that mainly revolves around beer drinking and very little excercise.

We'll even invite Glyde, he can make fun of all of us from the parking lot.

This very website (Which I'm thankful to be a part of) even supports posers. There is actually a spot here for "unicyclists" What do those clowns have in common with racing and riding? They can't even afford a frame and a front tire, much less handlebars... What a bunch of wannabe riders... 😉

I caught a kid yesterday wearing a Tennessee Titans Jersey. Knowing immediately he wasn't on the squad I ripped it of him and beat the [censored] out of him. So what if he was only 8!

a lot to catch up on, guess i need to stop riding so much and stay tuned to the boards!

wolter, good point about my bike - although, i referenced it the way i did simply to point out that i paid top dollar for a machine that is still functional and darn good to this day (and so as not to be a poser i should also point out that i peeled the postal decals off the frame within a month of getting the bike - although i am sure that you find that horrific because you seem to be more into collecting than actually riding and this ruins its collectibility!)

using my frame as an example, there was a reason to go with a logoed frame - that was the only option that produciton year! had i had another choice i would not have gone postal (no pun intended). my point about the jersey's is that there is no performance difference between a yellow and non-yellow jersey - so why not show some respect for the yellow (or green, polkadot, or pink).

you all are right that there are a plethora of team branded kits out there. i, however, believe that unless you are on the team you should stay away from them. although, i am getting the feeling that this argument is mute with most of you as you are the same group that goes to baseball, football, rugby, and any other sporting event dressed in the team kit just waiting for that magical moment when the coach or team director scans the stands in the final hour and points to you saying "You! Get down here and get in there!!! Your team needs you!" (HA HA HA HA) I am sure that i am just cracking myself up.....

the one sentiment that i do agree with in this thread is that, in the end, life is too short. do what you will and damn those that don't understand. i will take satisfaction in calling you a dork for wearing your kit and you can take satisfaction in knowing that i am cycling snot who apparently never paid heed to 'judge not lest you be judged'

Ever heard of Magnus Backstedt? 6'4", 216 pounds (actually Liggett said he weighed in at 219 the other day). Won Paris-Roubaix this year. Currently in fourth place in the Tdf GC standings. Doubt he fits into a medium. Even George Hincapie is 6'2" and 180 pounds.

With out going inside the debate about yellow jerseys and the right to use it (personally I don't, but I respect who want to buy/wear them), last Saturday I watched one Nike USPS yellow jersey at my LBS, about $130.00 USD, small size.

yes i have heard of those 2 out of 179 riders in the tour (neither of which have worn the Yellow). man you got me!

I don't wear Yellow because i have never earned one.... my entire point is about humility and respect for the accomplishments of others. Just because I can lay hands on a generals uniform complete with medals, do I have the right to wear it?

So, if it is against tradition for an enthusiast to wear a yellow jersey, wouldn't the companys that sell yellow jerseys be the real problem? They should know more about "tradition" than us [censored] weekend warriors.

Maybe a yellow jersey in a store should have a warning label on it (like rap cd's). You should have to show some kind of pro-card to get one. Maybe get a personal endorsement from Armstrong saying it's okay. The FBI can run your ID like they do if you buy a gun... Or better yet, maybe a note from my mom saying it's okay for little Bobbie to own one.

I respect the jersey, but it's only 1% of the equation, I respect the rider 99% more than the jersey he's wearing.

I also respect guys in the green, and the white and polka dots. I really dig on the white jersey riders.

Right now, I'm really becoming a Thomas Voekler fan. Not because of his jersey color, but because he has the heart of a LION (attack, attack, attack), I love this guy. I don't care what color he has on his back, and it's yellow after stage 8. He is a great rider, just happens to have a yellow jersey, and his riding style and talent would not change if he didn't have it.

Jersey color should have no meaning other than an indicator of position. So it's all about the jersey, the rider had nothing to do with it?

I think it's an insult to the rider that has it to say it's all about the jersey and nothing more than that.

If it was all about "tradition" Armstrong should be in it everyday, whether he wins or not. "here's your jersey dude, whatever"...."nice job on idlilng along in the middle of the peloton".... And I'm a Lance fan to the core, so don't read things into that statement that aren't there.

The jersey does not contain magical powers, it's just yellow. I'd be willing to bet a great deal of people on this very forum aren't even sure how the heck the whole jersey thing works. And most, given the thought of debating it, could not care any less, as we have jobs, families and mortgages to worry about too.

USPS has there store where you can purchase the 5X honorary one & doing a quick search turned up one for babies at numerous bike shop sites - I hear that glyde actually has one of those.
