Tektro/Cane Creek dummy lever

Hey, these are super easy to mod back and forth for people that only
run a front brake, but want a dummy grip! The pivot pin is simply
friction fit and pushes out easily so you can remove the lever.
Assembly is just as simple. Observe how the return spring hooks up
under a little screw before you remove it, so you can reassemble
properly.

What's a dummy lever?

Dear Bell,

A rear brake lever connected to nothing, mounted for its pleasingly
symmetrical appearance.

Some people are appalled by this useless fashion accessory, but
they're often even more appalled when it's removed because a bicycle
with only one brake lever looks odd.

A rider may find that his unmatched brake lever looms larger and
larger, until he imagines that it looks like this and that everyone is
staring at him:

Here are a few examples--just search for "dummy" at
www.fixedgeargallery.com:

http://search.freefind.com/find.html?id=68837735&pageid=r&mode=ALL&n=0&query=dummy

http://www.fixedgeargallery.com/2004/g/sarcione.htm

As the text mentions, dummy brake housings actually have a use--the
owners like to ride on the drops.

Ha ha. Thanks, Carl. I only run a front brake (with a right hand lever) on
my beater, so I don't find one lever strange, but I am not a two-wheel
fashionista. With a dummy, I'll be afraid that I may hit it in an emergency
forgetting that it's vacuum. Cheers.

I have set mounted on our tandem on the dropped bars for the stoker.
They great when climbing out of the saddle when in synch with the captain.

That's why I remove the lever on my 'dummy'. I like having being
able to ride on the hoods, especially when climbing. Shimano aero
levers have a set-screw that holds the lever pivot pin in place.
Loosen the set-screw, push the pin out, remove the lever. Just like
the OP was saying, with the addition of a set-screw.

Here's my newest ride, so equipped:

That's the idea behind removing the lever but leaving the hood. In
practice, after a ride, it's a bit weird feeling. I didn't think I
incorporated the actual lever part in one of my grips and the front
edge of the hood feels a bit uncomfortable.

Might have to put the lever back in the hood, which means the brake
goes back--as I, like you wouldn't want to have a decoy lever that I'd
forget did nothing. It would be a fun theft reduction device for when
I run in for a Squishy, though.

A hand rest for the other side of a bar with just one brake. Also used
for stoker bars on tandems
