And you'd be correct. Relaxation of the sphincter that keeps acids in your stomach and prevents them from backwashing up your esophagus is what GERD is about. I would suggest first trying to alter ones habits (not laying down after big meals or sleeping soon after eating) before trying to alter the acidity of the stomach for occasional reflux problems without other underlying issues.
Good advice. I just recalled something else that helps to relax that sphincter and contributes to GERD--SSRIs like Prozac--and so many people are on these these days, they may be exacerbating the problem.
Tums isn't very good unless you just want some calcium. Gaviscon is much better.
From what I read when I had GERD, Gaviscon is the only OTC that acts as a physical block between the acid and your esophagus. That would have been my next line of defense if the reflux had not stopped. (Is there anything worse than waking up with a mouth full of stomach acid? Ugh!)

Long term side effects in original studies indicated a significant increase in stomach cancer with test subjects.
It's why I won't use it OTC now that it's been de-regulated.

There's only 5 employees in the whole company plus the owner. Err, 4 now. It's s small outfit. Everyone else are subcontractors (20+) that work outside the office.

You think idiots deserve what they get? That's rather harsh. With a few possible exceptions, people don't choose to be idiots any more than they choose to be black, female, or short.
I'll also point out that when someone is validly fired for idiotic incompetence and nincompoopery, the first thing they do is accuse their bosses of being idiots. It's always someone else's fault with these people.
