I switched to the new Shimano integrated bb/crank system in January.

I'll never switch back.

It rocks.

Yeah, like WWI and WWII due to shortages due to the manufacturing of
war machines, ammo, etc.

That's not happening due to Iraq.

Gold has gone up, but that's tied to the fluctuating oil prices and
uncertainty in that market.

Steel (and many other metals) have been skyrocketing in past several
months, but it has nothing to do with Iraq. China, for one, is snapping
up metal like there's no tomorrow... it's insane.

Add to this that manufacturing is ramping up big time, at the same time.
Both Air Bus and Boeing have humongous programs going on, China is
trying to bring their infrastructure up to modern standards, plus they
have to get ready for the Olympics. Thank God my company does a lot of
business with all of the above.

I believe titanium has, too. Don't know about aluminum or steel.

For me and thee, it ain't broke. The problem is I'm a 155-pound spinner
whose idea of a big drop is an extra-high curb.

Not only do the freeriders break square-taper spindles like they were
made of Pocky, big strong roadies also routinely kill cranks. There's a
big boy in rec.bikes.tech (Jobst Brandt) who just routinely wrecks
cranks at the spindle interface. He's cautiously enthusiastic about the
Dura-Ace setup.

With the new outboard bearings, there doesn't seem to be a need for a BB
size increase. We're not going to need spindles too big to fit inside a
standard BB anytime soon .

The question I have is about bearing replacement after wear. It's one
thing to toss a BB with spindle when you can get a nice UN-72 for $20,
it's quite another thing when the spindle includes a press-fit crank and
spider. I don't think those will be $20 spares. But then, I gather that
bearing kits are available for the Shimano parts for a reasonable price.

As for the XT priciness, that sucks, but don't forget that the new Hone
group will offer a HollowTech II setup at what is expected to be Deore
LX-like pricing.

So cheap and behind on technology that none of this matters to me,
