Lance vs. Ullrich, the most obvious and hyped up battle in these last few years... however they are both getting old... so who will be cyclings biggest rivals in the future?

i think it will be Cunego vs. Valverde.

Boonen vs. Thomas Dekker

Only one year difference in thier age, could add up to a long rivalry.

Boonen's 24 and Dekker's 20?

And they're completely different riders. Boonen's a sprinter/classics man who won't survive in the big mountains, whereas Thomas Dekker is clearly a classy TT rider who will probably turn out to be a decent mountains rider.

I'd consider Philippe Gilbert (32nd in his first Giro last season), or Koen de Kort to be more of a rival to T.Dekker than Boonen.

Thomas Dekker v Thomas Lövkvist
Some combination of the above four riders, probably. Its hard to say though because no one seems to be the super rider that Lance or Jan could be. I mean to say they could both TT and climb (jan was a little weak here) I tink that Dekker might really have the ability here and Cunego rode a good Romandie tt, but who knows.

T. Dekker is the biggest talent we have in holland over the last 20 years. I think he has the potential to do great things. And over a few years when he weighs 67 (he likes snicker bars to much now so he is 71kg) he can climb with the best. His goal is in the future to win le tour........now 99% can't do that, I think he can. Just my 2 cents.......could be wrong again:cool:

Ooh yeah and Boonen and T. Dekker are totally different riders. Can't see anyone in the future holding Boonen off. He will win a lot of classics....The best move he made was paying off his contract at USPS and go to Quickstep....he really became a classic specialist.

Yep, my bad on the age difference. I thought I saw 1985 for the year Boonen was born. Let's not forget, that rivalries come from all sorts of racing, and not just The Giro, and TDF. They will still face each other in the one day classics as well. The original post didn't specify where the rivalry would stem from.

Perhaps not, but I still see Dekker as being more of a GT rider than a Classics rider. Sure, he'll certainly be up there at Amstel and L-B-L, but Boonen will probably do what he has done this season, which is focus totally on RVV and P-R, and then take a break.

and none of you forget Philippe Gilbert! It's a real shame there's not more people posting here. Doesn't anyone bother to follow young riders and see how they progress? ( I don't count Danielson ;) ).
