This featured article by Kenny Moore on the website of the Honolulu Marathon, tells a largely
unknown and moving story of one of the great distance runners of a few decades past.

Jere Van Dyk, a former top runner for the Univ. of Oregon, is mentioned as one of the main
advocates for Wolde in his persecution. Jere was given a long interview last night on the CBS-
TV overnight news, in his role as a CBS consultant and an expert on the Middle East. He lived
as a member of an Afghan tribe for two years and wrote a book about it, that gained him a
Pulitzer Prize nomination. He worked previously for many years as a NY Times reporter. A rare
and pleasing example of a runner who turned out to be good for something else.
