It was a great race to watch, even though the course was flat and the currymunchers had 8 foot fences around the whole circuit to keep the lepers and wild dogs out. The final few laps were excellent. ... and the fact that one of the three guys that did show was seen resting his head in his hands doesn't speak well for the sheer spectacle of it all.
East India Company? That was back in the day when dying from malaria was considered "just one of those things..." and the British Raj was a mere blink of an eye in the time frame of the East India Company, so what happened the rest of the time?

My old man was out there for the end of WW2 and for a few years after, including the start of the whole pakistan/india thing. He hated the place - apart from the high hills away from the cities and the bugs - as did most of the rest of the folks he was within his regiment.
Your dad hated the place coz he was probably racialist and soft, not like the poms were in the olden days.
