I thought someone one day may benefit from this information:
My Timex (Garmin) GPS unit died on me last week (the original, 3-inch
tall one, powered by 3 AAA batteries). It just wouldn't turn itself
on, even with a fresh set of batteries.
Fortunately, I am happy to report that it is quite easy to fix! The
problem was an exhausted Lithium 3-volt cell inside. After replacing
it with a new one, it came to life again.
It was quite easy. You will only need a Torx T5 driver:
- Remove the 6 Torx screws
- Remove the front cover (it comes off easily, and there is nothing
internally attached to it)
- The CR 2032 cell is held directly on the printed circuit board by a
metallic piece. On one side of it, it is soldered to the PCB, and in
the other there is a small "ear" that holds the cell in place. You'll
have to push this part outside the PCB and, simultaneously, push the
cell towards the opening.
- To replace the cell is easier: just open the entrance and insert the
fresh cell.
Hope this may help someone some day...
