i just %#@%$#ing tore a pair of them whilst trying to install. i lubed
the bodies w/ windex while they were firmly mounted on handlebars. is
there some trick to this? maybe heat in some hot water?

No need to disconnect the brake wire.
Windex isn't much of a lubricant. Try ArmorAll or Pledge.--
