  1. I am a 62 yr. old T2 diabetic controlled w/1000 mg. Metformin bid. I'm also on a beta blocker w/HCTZ
and atorvastatin (Lipitor 10 mg). My latest serum tests came in at:

    TC 126 TG 167 HDL 50 LDL 42 vLDL 33

What are the consequences of such a low TC and LDL? Should I consider coming off the statin and go
on a fibrate like gemfibrozil to better target my trigs (which sometimes go up to 350-400 w/my
metabolic syndrome)? Can LDL be too low? With the high trigs should I further test the lipids for
    Apo B-100, Lp(a), IDL?

Are you at a normal weight? (Sorry, healthy weight 🙂

If not, that's the first thing to achieve.

Check with your doctor, but if you are taking the beta blocker for hypertension, you might be better
off with an ACEI or an ARB.

Exercise and weight control are the first steps in normalising your blood lipids. After that,
medical advice is the only road to travel.

  4. Preston:

While your TC and LDL are on the low side, your TG is still to high relative to your HDL. There are
ways to lower your TG and VLDL while also increasing your LDL. Typically this would change the
composition of your LDL to one that was more fluffy and of larger in size - a quality that is
considered less likely to oxidize. I did this by consuming 4 grams of fish oil in capsules and
supplementing with antioxidants to prevent the EPA and DHA fatty acids from oxidizing.

Apo B-100 and Lp(a) are considered inflammation markers. I had to twist my gp's leg to get those
tested. Supplementing with fish oil can help to lower these markers.

I am also type 2 and use metformin (500mg/d) and a statin.
