Washington - A new study published in rapid access issue
of Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association says
that tooth loss caused by gum disease may be an indicator
of cardiovascular disease.

''To our knowledge, this is the first paper to identify a
relationship between tooth loss and subclinical
cardiovascular disease,''says lead investigator Prof
Moise Desvarieux, of the University of Minnesota,
Minneapolis.

According to him, preliminary findings from the Oral
Infections and Vascular Disease Epidemiology Study
(INVEST) suggest a link between tooth loss and
subclinical atherosclerosis -the symptomless build-up of
artery-clogging plaque in the carotid arteries, the
vessels that feed the brain.

It was found that the prevalence of carotid plaque
increased with the number of missing teeth. Among those
missing 0-9 teeth, 45 per cent had carotid artery plaque.
About 60 per cent of those with 10 or more missing teeth
had plaque build-up in the vessels.

Desvarieux notes that many of the participants with
periodontal disease also have other risk factors for
cardiovascular disease, such as smoking, poor diet and
low levels of physical activity.
