Hi there,
I'm aware this question is a little pathetic for the more knowledgeable on here to have to answer, but hey, I don't know where else to ask!
I currently have a 12 mile round trip commute daily, and need a new bike to do it on. I've been doing it on a £20 second hand mountain bike which rides like pedalling through jelly. It is an absolute nightmare and I can't really do it anymore.
I've decided that (on a budget of £350-400) I need to get myself a new bike. I want something nice and fast, well specced for the money (obviously), but comfortable enough that I could deal with slightly more leisurely rides on it.

I originally thought a Hybrid would be good, but one of the sportier ones like the Specialised Sirrus Sport, or the one I fell in love with, the Giant Rapid 4.

I'd like a road bike also, but i'm a little scared of them. I just worry a little that (because i'm a complete newbie), when I corner, the tiny little tyres are going to slide out from under me, or that in rain i'll slide everywhere. Is that actually the case or am I scaring myself over nothing?

Also, for my purposes, am I looking in the right places?

Thanks alot guys!

Josh

don't be scared of a road bike, with the slick tires (no tread), they actually grip road surfaces through corners MUCH better than mountain bike "knobby" tires
