Had a nice little walk over Sgor Mor in the Southern Cairngorms this morning. Paid my £2 " contribution" at the pay and display at Linn of Dee at 8 am and set off towards White Bridge then the very well maintained footpath up the east bank of the River Dee. About 2k up this path we turned east up by the stream coming from the Sgor Mor plateau. It started to rain about this time but visibility was still fairly good but the wind was rising dramatically as we climbed. The views from the summit were very good with the biggest surprise being how small The Devil's Point looks from this angle against the backdrop of Cairn Toul. You would seriously question whether or not The Devil's Point should be a Munro or just a top when viewed from here. By now the rain was more snow than sleet and the wind very strong. The temperature was about -5 but feeling a lot colder. Took the high level route out touching the trig on Sgor Dubh before heading downhill over Carn 'lc Duibhe and on through the gap in the trees arriving back on the track just 500m from the Linn of Dee. Back at the car just after 12 noon for the short trip to Braemar and The Hungry Highlander for Chip Butties, Superb !

Is there an honesty box or is it a ticket issuing meter thing? Who checks whether you pay or not and what happens if you don't?

It is set up as a standard Pay and Display car park with a nice new shiny blue ticket issuing machine. About half the cars parked at 8 am were displaying tickets and about half were not. When we returned about lunchtime I had another look and there was no notice or otherwise on any of the cars not displaying a ticket. I had a look at the sign next to the machine and it is worded as a £2 contribution to park used for the benefit of the estate and for footpath repairs etc. There is no indication of penalties for not doing so and no threats of clamping or other penalties. I think it is purely a voluntary fund raiser and on a personal note I have no problem "donating" £2 a time for the many excellent days I have had in the Cairngorms. cheers Graham

I don't think I would have a problem with that. I was worried that it might have been done in a high- handed manner similar to the 'ban' on bikes along the land-rover tracks.
