I'm curious to know what the tradenames/sponsors stand for in regards of products they sell of the professional teams in Europe. I've tried to find a website that lists them but no luck. Does anyone know of a website that might be of help ?

Is there a specific trade nmae that you had in mind, Wolf ?

Team names like Discovery are self explanatory - Mobile are communications,
Phonak are hearing aids etc.
Francais de Jeux are the French Lottery co.

Some team names like Iles Balears are sponsors for regions.

None in particular......Being from America some of these companies are not familiar to me. I have picked up on several of them such as Phonak..... But some of the others are confusing ..... Bartloworld is one that sounds interesting......
I find it interesting as to why certain companies find cycling a good source of advertising ..... My interest comes from spending several years in the advertising world.
There was an Italian team back in the early 90's that was a company that was involved in aluminum building products.. Alfa-Alum or something .....I can't quite remember it ......But I always thought having one of those jerseys would be neat because at that time I was involved in aluminum building products..... I can't quite remember the name but they had a great Italian rider at the time.....

There is a whole range of sponsors... here goes with a couple of the larger Italian teams...

Lampre - makes pre-coated metal sheeting (LAMiere PRErivestite) - http://www.lampre.com/content/group/indexU.asp

Fondital - is a water heater/radiator maker - http://www.fondital.com/

Milram - is a German dairy products firm (ok, German team, but Petacchi rides for them!) - http://www.milram.de/home.html

Liquigas - is the largest producer/supplier of liquid propane gas in Italy http://www.liquigas.it/ita/main.cfm

Barloworld are a South African company that trade in heavy engineering equipment as far as I know.

here's some others.

Gerolsteiner = water
Rabobank = Dutch Bank
Liquigas = Italian Gas Company
CSC = US Computer Co
Credit Agricole = French Financial Co.
Quick Step = Belgian Floor covering co
Lampre = Italian Steel Co
Liberty Seguros = Spanish Insurance Co (with Wurth who are a German industrial company).
Bouygues Telecom = French Telecom co.
Davitamon-Lotto = ????
Saunier Duval = airconditioning, room temp control and other automated products.
Cofidis =French Finance Co.

You got it right. Alfa-Lum is still around... http://www.alfalum.com/. They are actually not Italian, but from San Marino. After stopping with men's pro cycling they then moved into women's cycling... http://www.bikenews.it/bikewoman/squadre/alfa-lum/alfa-lum.htm

Can't remember for the life of me their big riders from the good old days. If I am not mistaken they always had a decent number of riders from the other side of the Iron Curtain... :confused:

Liberty are American - my mistake.

Caisse d' Epargne is a French bank
Euskaltel is the basque phone operator while Euskadi a basque cycling organization.
Innergetic is a mattresses manufacturer
Rabobank a dutch bank...
Panaria a ceramic industry (tiles etc.) and Navigare a yachting sportswear company.

Anyway I don't know if Liberty is a brand name used only in Spain or in US too, but the company is US certainly.

What is the deal with all the floor-covering sponsorships? Mapei, Quick-Step, Berry Floor...

Liberty Seguros is based in Spain, but it is owned by Liberty Mutual, a US insurance company. I wondered why the statue of liberty was their symbol, until I found that out. Got one of their jerseys, it's a pretty shade of blue.

Domina Vacanze (house of vacation) is a travel agency that, I believe, also operates several resorts.

One of my favorites was the now defunct Fassa Bortolo team, sponsored by a concrete manufacturer.

You would think one of the major cycling site would have this information, maybe they do but it's not obvious.

The January issue of VeloNews or was it Cycle Sport America had all the information you are looking for. It listed all of the UCI Pro teams and backgrounds on the sponsors. I will see if I still have mine and add to the information already provided above if needed.

1st of all, thanks to everyone for their input. I'm glad i found out about the diquegiovanni sponsor. My family's business was one of the 1st business's to import PVC into the US to be used for windows and doors. I will have to get one of their jerseys.

Basically it works for one brand so the others try it to remain competitive. Mapei and Quick Step are true global concerns, selling their products in hundreds of countries. Imagine the cost of a brand advertisng campaign in every country vs the 'quality by association' perception that can be achieved by sports sponsorship. Sponsorship is far more cost effective (assuming you have the budget to do it on an appropriate scale).

Long may it continue.

.

Yeah, that Liberty jersey is very nice.

I'm almost tempted to purchase one

my favorite is still jelly belly, the sponsor for a big US continental team. Jittery Joe's is also cool, a coffee shop in Georgia with a pretty big continental team.
