What is the best way to train for a short race(criterium) of a duration lasting around an hour or so ? Should endurance rides still be done?

An hour is Long for a crit which is run at high speed thats about 40 k at High Speed id say you still should do longer rides 80k at steady pace and occasionaly longer rides 100-160k (If you have time) also do shorter rides 35k with intervals (best with training partner) hope this helps. If you look through the Forum you will find lots of advice on training. I also find a Heart rate monitor very valuable to monitor rides

    Race lots!

Also, try to get out on a fast local bunch ride once a week. It's good practice for handling, taking turns, and changing pace.
