Hello All,
I am very new to cycling (2 months) and have started training for a small race from Durango to Silverton (Colorado) called the IronHorse Classic. This trek involves about 47 miles and 5,000 plus feet of vertical climb.
I have started training on my mountain bike (32 pounds, big knobby tires) doing 12-20 mile rides 3-4 times a week. I average about 17 mph unless I'm taking it easy. I'm not a little guy: about 200 lbs. but plan on losing about 10 of that.
My question is this: Assuming the impending purchase of an actual road bike, what type of training would be beneficial to that sort of race? I'm planning on doing a lot of hill work in the Spring but have the winter to continue building my base....
Any suggestions?
Chad
