Training for the spring

I am somewhat new to competative cycling. I completed some collegiate races in the spring but I was not competative, it was more a learning experience. Before that I was merely a fiddiling mtn biker, I've only had my road bike since Nov.

So my question is: How should I plan my training year. I want to get a few top 10 finishes in the C class if not a win (which I was not competative in at all last year). How should I structure my training year, and what do I need to be doing now, in the fall, and in the winter considering next years season is from early march with championships in early may. I've read both the Friel and the 7-week Armstrong book. Both seem good but considering I have no real race fitness or ability how do I modify these plans for such inexperience in order to be ready in the spring?
