Hey everyone,

I am looking to buy a new road bike. I plan on doing some local races. Due to budget, I am looking at either the 2005 Trek 2300 or the 2006 Trek 2200. The 2300 apparently will not be produced during 2006. It has been replaced by the 2200. The difference seems mostly to be with the front derailleur and a few of the Bontrager parts. The 2300 is all ultegra, while the 2200 is mostly ultegra but a 105 front derailleur and a Bontrager Race Lite crankset. The other difference is in things like the carbon seat post (Bontrager Race Lite vs Bontrager Race X Lite). The difference in price is about $500 for the 2300. Would the "X" version of the Race Lite parts be that much of a difference? My assumption is no. I could upgrade the parts later on as needed.

The other question I have is, the 2200 is a 9 speed and the 2300 is a 10 speed ultegra. How much of a difference would be noticed? I ride a 9 speed right now. Would that 10th gear matter all that much? This might seem like a dumb question, as it probably is, but is that 10th gear going to give me a "high" or a "low" gear?

Thanks

Better wheels, full Ultegra, 10 speed ...... I'd spend the $500. Since it is an '05 leftover you might even get them to knock another $100 off it. Got 3 9 speed bikes and 1 10 speed ride. Although I'm more than content with 9 speeds, to get the latest and greatest for minimal extra cash is a good move.
