Trek MTB dilemma: '09 4500 or '10 3900?

They are about the same price.

the '09 4500 is white and has no disc brakes, but has the rockshox lock.

the '10 3900 is black and has disc brakes.

A third alternative is - pass on either of these and spend the extra money on a 6000.

Any advice, opinions, thoughts, are welcomed and appreciated.

I am not doing "real" mountain biking - I am a city dweller with some bumpy streets, who gets out on a gravel travel once in a blue moon.

Then why do you want to purchase a mountain bike?

...for the same reason that half the bikes in NYC are MTBs - because they are a pleasure to ride.

Since '10 3Ks are built on '09 4K frames, the differences are real hair-splitters. OK, get the 4500. You won't need disc brakes on the street and without them the bike is less likely to be stolen or stripped.

But since the bike won't be ridden in the dirt, a Trek 7.2 or 7.3 FX might make more sense.

I rode a 4500 for several years and it is a decent bike. I now have a 4900 covered with dust because my road bike is a pleasure to ride and lift.
