  1. When choosing race clothing, there is a clear trade-off between convenience and customization. Tri suits simplify transitions, while separates offer flexibility. For many, the allure of a single-piece suit is the perceived professional look and the streamlined transition speed, but the practicalities of the three sports often complicate that choice.

Comfort across the swim, bike, and run is critical, and weather or race distance can make a suit feel restrictive or a set of separates feel cumbersome. While a suit removes the need to change clothes, the flexibility of separates allows riders to adjust for temperature or personal preference more easily.

Does the gain in transition speed actually outweigh the flexibility and comfort provided by separates for your specific race distance?

  2. For the distances I'm looking at, like an Olympic or maybe a half IM, the few seconds saved in transition just aren't worth the trade-off in comfort. I'm more interested in having a nice, comfortable ride than breaking any records, so I'd much rather have the flexibility of separates if it means I'm not feeling restricted for hours on the bike.

  3. Comfort wins for me too, those few seconds in transition aren’t worth feeling like you’re wearing a straightjacket for the next 90 minutes on the bike. I’ve seen riders in tri suits on hilly Olympic courses end up fiddling with zips and sleeves mid-ride because they didn’t account for how the suit would feel once they warmed up. Separates let you adjust layers or pockets without stopping, and for a 53-year-old just getting into road riding, that flexibility is worth more than any theoretical time save.
