Tufo tubular tape with other tires

I am looking to tape my first set of tubular tires. I have heard great things about tape and have had good experience with it, however I have always used Tufo tires. They recommend only using it with Tufo tires, but I think that's just a scam to get you to buy their tires. Has anyone else taped rims and used continental, vittoria, etc.?

I guess that depends on what the base tape of the TUFO tyre looks like compared to continental and vittoria, etc tyres. Continentals have bare cotton base tape whilst vittorias have a rubberised coating on the base tape.

The recommendation of Tufo would mean to me that they won't be to blame if the product fails on non-Tufo tyres. You have been warned.
