1. Last Sat, I took a new club member who is an Enthusiastic Newbie out to
Riverside. The ride was billed as moderate/beginner so no whining about the
pace for others that showed up. What a blast! Here's a big guy, on his new
HT, first MTB, who has got game like you wouldn't believe. I did a minimal
amount of skills/body position review in the parking lot ( no newbie should
be without IMO) and off we went. I tried to make the route maximum
singletrack without anything truly intimidating. So he got to ride some
hills, negotiate babyheads, and speed through the forest. I think the
moderate pace was good - he said he appreciated not getting thrashed, and it
gave him a chance to enjoy the ride. He said, " I love getting spanked by
older women". Hee hee.
2. Paladin was in town for a convention with his family. We escaped this
morning for a "tour de Riverside". Mr. Adventure had his shoulder surgery
yesterday and I've been taking care of him, so I needed out for a few hours,
and Paladin had been conventioning and sharing a hotel room with the lovely
Mrs. Paladin and 4 teenagers, so he needed out for a few hours too. Mr.
Adventure was gracious enough to offer his bike for Chris, who already had
shoes etc. I showed up at the hotel with two bikes, nice and early. The
goal was to ride for an hour ( yeah, right) ~ at least that's the idea
anyway.
I took him on one of my standard every day rides - four miles of trail along
the river, which is every thing from 36" wide dirt path to windy single
track with blind corners. Then, past the airstrip, a little bit of
fireroad, back onto the singletrack. I tell Chris, go on ahead, this piece
is fun to go really fast on. And no, I don't know how well my husband's bike
tires corner. We have to stop for a time assessment. Keep in mind, Mr
Adventure is morhphined to the hilt, Mrs. Paladin in riding herd on 4 teens,
but I have my cell phone.
Then, up half mile hill, along the bluff for a few miles, and then I get to
showcase the trail I helped build last year which put a big smile on his
face. This also means we are near the end. 12 fast miles under our belt,
and both of us have an adjusted attitude for the rest of the day. Thanks,
that was fun.
