SNEKKERSTEN, Denmark (AP)—The world cycling governing body has suspended the French federation for the rest of the year for a breach of rules.

The International Cycling Union says French officials were disloyal and broke the governing body’s rules when they sided with organizers of the Paris-Nice race in March.

The UCI has been in a long-running power struggle with race organizer Amaury Sports Organization, which also runs the Tour de France.

The French federation ignored the UCI’s warnings it would be punished for going ahead with the Paris-Nice race using French rules and doping controls.

We'll see if the French federation will pay the fine. 10 000 Swiss Francs is just over 6000 euros so the fine is quite small.
The more interesting piece of news about UCI is that they will include a Russian Tour and change the places of a few races in 2009. And they acknowledge that the Tour is not on the UCI calendar for next year.

Wow what draconian measures by the UCI. What the fark ? How will they ever pay back that 10,000 franc fine ?
____________

"The UCI Management Committee imposed a fine of 10,000 Swiss francs on the FFC. The FFC will be suspended until 31 December 2008."

The statement said that no French riders or events would be under threat from the consequences of the decision.

"The UCI Management Committee rejected the option to exclude French riders from the World Championships and other international events, in particular the Olympic Games."

McQuaid said he was "satisfied that the sanctions did not affect French riders or events".

Isn't the FFC running in the red though? I thought this point was brought up when the issue of the 100k Euro fine for doping was going to be paid to them. Unless I have the French organizations mixed up.

Might not be entirely an irrelevent point if they are moving towards independence with the French Federation forming the basis for a new governing body.

I doubt they are running in red. And in any event, the government will cover things in an olympic year anyway.

No problem. They'll sell a few service visits to Max Mosley or Eliot Spitzer. Everything will be just fine.

True ! The UCI got nothing on the FIA.... McQuaid in a Nazi orgy ????

Heros: I'm hearing rumors that ASO are about to buy the
Tour of Flanders.... heard much about this ? That would put ASO in a very strong position on the races calender..... thoughts ?

LOL. Pretty soon UCI will be looking after the junior races and that's about it.

Will there be the launching of a new international federation in 1-2 years? Certainly possible if ASO and RCS get together. Bring in the Spaniards for the Vuelta and San Sebastian and you have the main professional races covered. UCI can then blather on about whatever they want...

In the UK the UCI are currently trying to muscle the sportive organisations....... there was a sportive on the weekend which because the riders were leaving in bunches of 50 the UCI deemed it a "race" and demanded that they control the event....... I mean this is just a ride for weekend riders for christsake in the British countryside and the UCI are trying to control it..... its getting silly....they tried to shut the event down then they tried to muscle British Cycling.... a comprise was agreed and the event went ahead with no timing ! Just stupid........ the end of the day the loser is the riders....

...... the end of the day the loser is the riders....
They DON'T lose, they are the ones taking the dope that started this all anyway...seems to me they are getting exactly what they want.
