Lim - I'd go so far to say that the UCI knew well before Festina and particpated in sweeping doping under the carpet. They couldn't act as they were involved. [censored] Voet revealed this at the Festina trials of 2000. This was backed up in 2005 in the Armstrong EPO case.

Perhaps the UCI did know about it before festina.

But the public wakeup call came at TDF 1998 : the media coverage alone should have compelled the UCI to do something.
And let's remember, it wasn't the UCI who uncovered Festina - it was the civil authorities in France and Belgium.
    The UCI did nothing.

maybe we have all be duped since before Festina as well - my point is that Festina should have been the line in the sand.
Instead, we had "clean" riders after Festina doing faster times than their EPO fuelled predecessors!

Bild has reported that there has been rioting in the streets of the former East Germany about the Ullrich positive match.... photos are being posted to the website as we speak.... things look grim... this could be the start of the cold war again..... over 1000 mumma Ullrich look-a-likes have stormed the former sports school in Rostock that Ullrich grew up in.... (the school closed down 15 years ago but don't tell them that)....... ps there won't be any bratwurst in the shops tomorrow morning as the Mumma Ullrich's go on strike......

Damn WBT! Will you stop at nothing to find excuses to post pictures of your sister? 😉

Yup. Even if Festina was not enough to convince the UCI to act, the changing legal climate in various countries should have been enough to convince the UCI that looking away would no longer work and they needed to do something before the [censored] hit the fan again.

  4. Well i´m aware that probably in the next 2 months cycling world will have a huge decrease.
The cycling world is in suspense from a reaction from Ulle. Will he be the one to brake the "omerta". The cycling worls left him alone so why shouldn´t he...

Maybee they start to make less money.

then dopping at present cost won´t be profitable.

  5. Would fans prefer to see doping being allowed?

For me the entire fascination of the sport revolved around a riders ability to maximise their talent, to watch their diet, to train longer and harder, - without recourse to doping.
That's why I raced and that's why I loved the sport.

I assumed that because my competitors were better able to maximise their talent, to watch their diet better, to train longer and harder, than me, that that was why they won more than I did.
To me that is what sport is all about.
    Achieving success through honest means.
    Is this naive?

Even as a former user I would love to see sports as completely drug free, but I don't see it happening. Not to sound like FF, but there is too much money at stake and there are too many greedy people that care more about money and fame than following the rules.

I believe most of us would love to see and experience what you wrote.

  8. This is ridculous!!! The French have been out to frame Ullrich ever since Lance hugged Ullrich at his going away party in 2005! My riding partner knows a guy who is friends with Tyler's cousin and he said that the same guy that killed Tugboat with a blowgun in 2004 also performed the DNA test of Ullrich's DNA. Coincidence? Not! Plus, L'Equipe hates the Germans ever since that thing with the Maginot Line. Plus, DNA testing does not work ... just look at OJ! I bet you anything Walsh and Pound are behind this. Also, this has Betsy Andreau's fingerprints all over it.

You people who keep testing DNA for dope cheats are destroying the sport. They are all innocent, Lance says so!

    FREE JAN!!!!!!!!

You're not naive at all, and this is what we should expect from sportsmen. If they can't adhere to this, then they should no longer call their activity sport, but entertainment. There is still a clear difference in my mind btwn sport and entertainment, and in the last few years pro cycling has been neither (except for the doping soap opera which really has been quite entertaining).

I don't think money has anything to do with it. Athletes have an intense desire to win regardless of the earnings. The only thing big money has brought is a budget to buy drugs and doctors.

Somewhat off topic, but related.... Does anyone else feel left behind at the gym? 15 years ago, it seemed like people looked normal at the gym with your few steroid dudes that looked out of control. In other words, I didn't look terribly different than most people. Now I go to the gym and everyone is ripped and has arms twice the size of mine (which really isn't saying much). I just get the feeling that a lot of the 20 yr olds out there are on stuff for no other reason than to look good (except for the terrible acne they induce). So if these guys are doing it, what do we expect the pro athletes are doing?

LOL. You search through my old posts, ignoring all the anti-dope ones, and all you can come up with is a comparison between Ullrich's one ecstacy positive and Armstrong's mutliple EPO positives? You could not come up with a gem like this one from yourself (referring to Armstrong's EPO tests):

The knife cut deep? It must cause you got punked pretty bad. Good thing your boy Lim came in for the big save and bailed you out. Just remember I'm not the one who opened my big mouth and said this......

You asked for it, I didnt.

And you could not come up with anything except a lame comparison between Ullrich's one ecstacy positive and Armstrong's six EPO positives. So do you still maintain that Armstrong did not dope?

  15. Well, if confirmed beyond a doubt it's sad because I actually liked JU, simply because he was a fighter and was the only guy able to give LA a run for his money.

But maybe the playing field is more level than we think. 🙁

Would I dump cycling because of this? Can I dump my own blood?

You mean "officially allowed? Because essentially it already is "allowed". The "attmempts" to quell doping seem to be nothing more that a smoke-screen to try to dupe the public into believing there's some sort of real effort to clean-up the sport. Doping has been part of "the game" for a long, long time. I'm not saying that it's a good thing. Only that that's how it is.

Should they "allow" doping? It seems to me the only difference it would make in the sport is that then the sanctioning bodies could stop wasting a bunch of money pretending they're trying to put a stop to it.

If the UCI allowed unrestricted doping then much of the sponsorship money would evaporate. I imagine that it would become difficult in some countries to hold races. Right now the authorities are required to maintain the fiction.

To me its a sadder day than when OP was cracked open with Saiz’s arrest..... a small part of me always thought big Jan was innocent but now no more.. I trust no cyclist..... Landis can go and get farked and if he thinks I ever want him in the sport he can go fark his local priest..... as for all of the rest of them Basso included what can I say ? Now I have lost total interest in the sport until the cyclists get together and tell Basso or any other OP rider not to ride..... its just a mockery if Basso rides without providing DNA.....

….and don’t even mention Armstrong because he’s the one who started all of this.

OK lets get real here. Ullrich came out of nowhere and won the year after Riis "Mr. 60%" wins and the year before the Festina affair. To think he could do this clean is just, well MORONIC. Now if we think they are all dopers and have been since at least 96, then to blame it on Armstrong and or Landis as if they started it is just as MORONIC. And in fact if you look at or study the history of cycling who can say which years have been raced completely clean.

  19. It came as no surprise to me. First of all he came from the dirtiest program the sporting world has ever know. The East Germans. He rode with Riis. The blood bag had his name on it.
Everyone in cycling knew he was guilty. That is why he was treated so badly by all the teams.
Shame on T-Mobile.... They have offered a team program with known doping going on, but as soon as their main man gets caught, they run and preach "anti-doping." I hope they leave cycling......I always suspected they were ball lickers when they chose the pink color for their jersey.
But to treat him as he has been treated is simply wrong. And this story is about JU, not Armstrong, Basso, and Landis......

This sport has always been about doping over the last 35+ years. . The anger I feel is directed at the ones in cycling who did not stand by his side when it became evident he was involved. The riders need to be protected, not banned. If they want to eliminate doping, they need to look at the old guard in the sport. Riis, Lefevere, Bruyneel, Saiz, and most everyone else.

  20. Has anyone given any thought to the amount of blood that was matched. 9 bags is about 4.5 liters. That's too much if your were just to transfuse once or twice for the Tour. Prentice Steffan, the former doctor at Postal, alleged that riders were transfusing blood before the start of critical stages (but after the vampires would come) and then dumping the blood after the stage. That would explain how performance levels are the same as they were when there was unrestricted EPO use.
