Ultegra Medium Cage

I have never seen Medium Cage Ultegra advertised. Long cage
would be a better bet IMHO. I have used a 105 short cage
mech with a 13-24 cassette and
52/39/30 rings, and make sure I reserve the 30 for use with
the two or three largest sprockets only

long or short for ultegra. Ideally, use the long one for
your setup.

I believe there's only a short and medium cage -- that
is, they call the road-series derailers with larger
cages "medium".

I'm using a 105 short cage with a 11/27 cassette and 30-42-
52 crank. Chain length is critical to making this work. That
said, it works fine for me.

It does wind up a lot if I cross the 30 with small cogs, but
works okay even then, and that's something I'd avoid either
way. I'd say I have probably five cogs that I can use in the
30 ring without the chain rubbing the wrong end of the cage
(maybe only four). The chain never goes slack or does
anything terrible even in small-small.

The cage ends up nearly parallel to the ground if I cross
big-big -- again, works fine, but not a good idea regardless
of derailer cage.

'Medium' has become a label due to mountain bike
derailleurs. Shimano has SS (short) and GS (long/'medium'😉
in road models, and GS (short/'medium'😉 and SGS (long) in
mountain models.

A road medium (GS) is best. I've tried an SGS Deore (long)
on a 12-25 and thought that the sifting was a bit off (and
others here have reported no problems- go figure 🙂 I think
this is because the geometry of the body is designed to work
with up to a 34 tooth rear. I did adjust the angle in back
as close as possible, but when I switched to a GS 105, the
shifting improved markedly.
